There are three things you should do
if you want to achieve some
certainty about your vocation.
They are: |
Pray!
Prayer is the first place to start. Pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance and ask the Lord to reveal to you his choice for your vocation. Make use of the grace available to you in the sacraments through frequent reception of the Eucharist and frequent celebration of the Sacrament of Penance. Daily Mass is very helpful. It is important to remain in a state of grace, so that you may be more attuned to the voice of Christ in your life.

Speak!
You should not attempt to search for your vocation entirely on your own. You should ask the help of at least one other trusted person, so that you have an objective person you can bounce your thoughts off of. This should be a person who will tell you what is true, not
necessarily what you might want to hear. Your pastor may be a good person for this. You should speak to at least one person, but you may consult more if you desire. You can also contact the Diocesan Vocation Director, who can help to provide answers to your questions, as well as suggest questions you have not yet thought of. You can reach him at
vocations@eriercd.org.

Act!
Practice the works of mercy, assisting the poor and the needy as you are able. Do your best to live a good, moral life. Be active in your parish, e.g., youth group, lector, server, usher, etc. Take part in retreats and diocesan programs. Arrange for a visit to St. Mark Seminary in Erie. If you are still not sure and you think that you might be called and want to find out for certain, you should seriously consider applying to the seminary. The seminary program is designed as a place to find out if you are called to be a priest or not. Young men enter to find out. Give the seminary a try for one year, at the end of which you will be much closer to knowing whether or not you are called to the priesthood. You will learn much about God, yourself, others, and life, have one year of college completed, and be much closer to finding your life's purpose. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. Above all, trust that Christ will not lead you astray if you are trying to do his will. Do not be afraid. He will take care of you.

On a final note, the diocese of Erie sponsors several events throughout the year so that you can join with other young men who are asking the same questions as you are. Chief among these are two annual retreats at the seminary in Erie: one for grade 12 and older in the Fall, and another for grades 10-12 in the Spring.
